Career development

We’re a flat organisation with very little hierarchy, a strong focus on developing broad business skills and feeding entrepreneurial hunger.

There are a number of ways to build a career here:

  • Develop an original idea – be it one of ours or a new one of your own – from inception. This involves growing a team of people with you to run and build a major business
  • Join with someone who’s already started building one of these businesses, and develop your own management or creative role to complement them
  • Move into a cross-business management role such as Marketing Manager or e-Business Manager for the company as a whole.  Since we’re a flat structure the number of these roles is small, but increasingly influential

Our philosophy is not to give you a desk and chair with a job title attached to it, but to give you a number of nudges in the right direction.

Consequently, whatever path you take in our organisation, you will develop more business skills than any of your peers at the same age, including the ability to use your judgment to make business decisions in a wide variety of environments and situations.

Training

We have developed much of our own training since there is little external training of genuine value available in the industry. Because of this you’re mostly trained on-the job, being mentored by more experienced colleagues, and guided by our own Best Practice guides.

And as well as training you in the skills and processes involved, we also try to give you a more rounded business education. As one of our former employees has said: “Working at FC is better than an MBA”.

Having said that, we treat formal training seriously, because we’re interested in you – and in how we can bring out your full potential.  As of 2009, we have a new training programme that includes twice yearly off-site training courses with external guest trainers/speakers that are organised in cooperation with academic institutions in the USA and in the UK.
